Getting Started with your Windows Server Web Site

Using FTP / Fetch to upload files

If you are using FrontPage, you should publish your files from FrontPage (see instructions further down the page).  If you are not using FrontPage, and your web publishing software does not have a publishing function, you will need to upload your files with an FTP client.  There are various FTP programs availble, and you probably have at least one on your computer right now.  But it is easy to download one for free from the Internet. Click these links:  Download WS-FTP for Windows 3.x,    Download WS-FTP for Windows 95, 98 or XP,   Download Fetch for MAC

1.  Log on to the Internet, then start your FTP or Fetch program.
2.  Look for a field called Host Address / IP address and enter the IP
address we assigned you. Or, if your domain name is active on
ZyLink, enter your FTP URL (ftp.yourdomain.xxx)
3.  Enter the USERID we assigned you in the "USERID" field, and enter your
PASSWORD in the "PASSWORD" field. Leave all other options at their
default settings.
4.  Click "OK", this will log you into your site, and you will be ready to
upload your files. When you log in, you will automatically be in the root web directory of your site. This will be the directory where you will place your home page.
5.  When you first open your site, you will see a set of directories.
These directories and files, in order, are: db, log, special, www.  DO NOT erase these pre-set directories.  The www directory is where you should place your web pages and images.  Databases can be placed in the db directory.  You don't have to put them there, but this is the most secure place because it is above the root web directory.
6.  Each FTP client works a little differently, but generally to upload files you need to first go to the directory on your local computer that contains your web files, highlight the files you want to upload.  Then simply press an arrow key or an upload key or something similar to copy the file(s) onto the server's drive.  Be sure to use the ASCII mode for text files, and Binary for graphic files.  Once your files are transferred, you are finished. You can now look at your Web site with your web browser. (i.e. Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer).

NOTE: If you are using Fetch, remember to select the "RAW DATA"
transfer mode.

To assure that your site comes up when you type in your domain
name, please make sure you use one of these file names for your
starting/home page. "default.htm", "default.html", "index.htm",
"index.html". If you are set up for ASP, you could also name your page index.asp or default.asp.  If your site requires a different starting page, and it would
require many hours of work to change your site to use one of these
names, please contact us and we will try to accommodate you.
