UNIX (LINUX) OR WINDOWS ?
The UNIX operating system is still the most popular web
server platform. Linux is a version of UNIX. For people who are new to web
development and have never used UNIX, there is sometimes reluctance to choose this
platform. Do not fear. You do not need to know UNIX to place sites on UNIX
servers. Web sites developed on Windows PCs or Apple MACs can easily be uploaded to
a UNIX server. Also, UNIX does support FrontPage extensions if you require them.
Though UNIX remains the most popular web platform,
Windows is making strong inroads. The Windows platform is a little less
stable, and requires more maintenance. For this reason, our Windows 2000 prices are
a little higher than our Linux prices.
Windows servers have some popular features, including
database connectivity through ODBC, Active Server Pages, and Cold Fusion. But if you
do not intend to use the WIndows-specific features, we highly recommend choosing a Linux
plan.
